Following his Canadian certification in plastic surgery, Dr. Almutairi moved to the United States for advanced training in two complementary subspecialty areas.

At the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center — UPMC, he completed fellowship training in aesthetic plastic surgery and body contouring after massive weight loss, addressing complex changes involving skin, soft tissue, the breast, the abdominal wall, and overall body contour.

He then pursued advanced training in hand surgery and reconstructive microsurgery at the University of Nevada, including nerve and tendon injuries, tissue reconstruction, and microsurgical tissue transfer.

During his American career, he practised as a plastic surgeon and served in academic roles at institutions including the University of Pittsburgh, the University of Nevada, and later Michigan State University and Sparrow Hospital.

Formal recognition by the United States Government for extraordinary ability in the sciences

Dr. Almutairi's scientific and academic achievements received exceptional formal recognition in the United States.

On two separate occasions, he was awarded O-1 status by the United States Government under the classification reserved for Aliens of Extraordinary Ability in the Sciences.

Dr. Almutairi's clinical experience spans refined aesthetic surgery and complex reconstruction, including facial and nasal surgery, facial rejuvenation, body contouring and surgery after major weight loss, breast surgery and fat grafting, as well as hand, nerve, tendon, microsurgical, and tissue-reconstruction procedures.

To him, aesthetic and reconstructive surgery are not entirely separate disciplines. Both require accurate anatomical understanding, preservation of function, and the ability to restore balance between structure and appearance.

Wide-awake aesthetic surgery

In his recent practice, Dr. Almutairi has focused on developing and applying wide-awake aesthetic surgery under local anaesthesia in appropriately selected procedures.

This may include selected procedures involving the nose, eyelids, brow, ears, face, neck, and limited areas of body contouring when the nature of the procedure, the patient's condition, and the intended outcome are suitable.

He does not present local anaesthesia as inherently superior for every patient or operation, and avoiding general anaesthesia is not treated as an objective in itself. The boundaries of the approach are defined clearly, and general anaesthesia is recommended when a more comprehensive procedure, patient comfort, safety, or surgical precision makes it the more appropriate choice.

The individual before the technology

Dr. Almutairi believes that medicine is not defined by technical ability alone.
